Gamescom 2026, day 1: Opening Night Live announcements that stuck

Day one of Gamescom 2026 wrapped with Opening Night Live — the show’s main evening broadcast. Jeff Keighley had already warned that the night would lean on known games more than a spray of world premieres. Technically, he was right. But a handful of unexpected series returns and a few very concrete announcements still stuck harder than another round of cinematic cutdowns.

This is not a full transcript of the stream. It is eight things worth talking about after the show: Saber’s new trucking adventure, tactical Worms, Crazy Taxi’s return, a remake of Heroes III, a major Witcher 3 update, an expanded Onimusha demo, new Metro 2039 gameplay, and the Weapons in the Final Fantasy VII trilogy finale. I checked names, dates, and platforms against the publishers’ own posts.

Road Kings: Hard Truck 2 energy, from the SnowRunner studio

Road Kings was already announced at Opening Night Live 2025, so Saber Interactive’s new game was not a world premiere. What changed is that they replaced a staged trailer with the first actual gameplay cut and named a date: March 11, 2027. Publisher: Focus Entertainment. Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The Hard Truck / 18 Wheels of Steel comparison is not only about the trucks. Road Kings is not built as a calm endless delivery loop. You start as a hired driver, earn reputation, pick jobs, watch the cargo, and eventually build your own haulage company. The southern United States throws accidents, bad weather, and disasters at you, and a single run becomes a short story with a real chance of blowing the contract.

This is still Saber — the studio that already took heavy machines apart screw by screw in MudRunner, SnowRunner, and RoadCraft. So the interesting question is not the Unreal Engine 5 “living world” promise. It is whether a forty-ton tractor feels convincing on wet asphalt. If Saber can join its off-road physics to the career and roadside stories of those older trucking games, this will not be a Euro Truck Simulator 2 clone. It will run at a different tempo.

Worms: Galactic Tactics — Worms meets XCOM

The exact title is Worms: Galactic Tactics. It is not another classic side-view entry, and it is not simply Worms dressed like Final Fantasy Tactics. Absolutely Games is developing it, Team17 is publishing it, and the studio itself calls the game a tactics roguelite.

What remains from familiar Worms: destructible arenas, bazookas, sheep, ridiculous misses, and the joy of shoving an opponent somewhere they did not mean to go. What is new: 3D battlefields, the Galactic Gauntlet run of challenges, permanent upgrades between attempts, and weapon mods after each fight. Shots hang on accuracy mini-games, height matters, and you can assemble and outfit a worm squad.

Structurally this sits closer to XCOM and modern tactics roguelites than to Final Fantasy Tactics: positioning, sight lines, destructible cover, and short repeatable runs matter more than a big JRPG campaign with class trees. Alongside the solo “run,” local and online one-on-one duels are promised. Release is aimed at 2027 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour — a new game

Crazy Taxi: World Tour is a new game. SEGA first properly introduced it in June; Opening Night Live showed the multiplayer. The full game ships in 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.

World Tour keeps the arcade core: grab a passenger, ignore common sense, and try to deliver them before the city recovers. Now there is also a story mode, five cities, car customization, and online races. For players who want the old formula, SEGA promises a separate classic arcade mode.

What the show confirmed was a closed network test. Sign-ups run through August 31; the test itself is September 11–13 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. Switch 2 is not in the test. Players get two modes: Pickup Race for six drivers and team Cops ’N’ Cabbies, plus two maps, six cars, and four characters. This is a servers-and-crossplay test.

Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake — Ubisoft rebuilds the third game

The riskiest announcement of the night was Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake. It is a separate remake of the 1999 game — not the 2015 HD re-release and not Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Ubisoft is rebuilding Erathia from scratch on Snowdrop: instead of fixed isometric views you get a full 3D world, a free camera, dynamic lighting, weather, and seasons.

Content-wise they promise the base game plus both expansions — Armageddon’s Blade and The Shadow of Death — all nine factions, and the original campaigns. Those campaigns will be joined into one continuous story with a prologue, an epilogue, and new staged scenes. Hot seat, online play for up to eight players, simultaneous turns, and a map editor are coming back.

Ubisoft’s boldest promise is compatibility with thousands of user maps and campaigns made over 25 years. For a game whose life has long depended on more than the original campaign, that matters more than 4K. This is also where you should wait for technical detail: moving old maps into a 3D remake sounds much harder than a checkbox labeled “mod support.”

The remake ships in 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. On the same day Ubisoft also put the original Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition on Steam for the first time — a separate release, not a free remake copy.

The Witcher 3 Remastered: free update, separate paid expansion

ONL’s finale is easy to mix up, because CD Projekt RED showed two products at once. The first is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, a major update to the 2015 game. It launches on September 29, 2026 and is free for current Witcher 3 owners on supported platforms: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. Native Nintendo Switch 2 and Battle.net versions arrive the same day, but those are new purchases.

Remastered is not only a graphics pass. Improved combat, movement, and Roach handling, new monster behavior, a reworked skill tree, transmogrification, an expanded photo mode, and new finishers are all on the list. CD Projekt RED and Yigsoft are building it.

The second announce is Songs of the Past, a separate story expansion about Geralt and a new region called Letten. It ships in 2027, is being made with Fool’s Theory, and will be paid.

What also arrived as a free surprise are the two older expansions: every current Witcher 3 owner already received Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no extra charge. CD Projekt separates that from Remastered: the old expansions unlocked right after ONL, while Songs of the Past sells on its own in 2027.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword — a big update to the existing demo

Capcom brought Onimusha: Way of the Sword already on the home stretch: the game ships on September 4, 2026. The show ran the Challenges That Await trailer with new bosses, a duel with Dokyo, and the first look at Musashi’s fully awakened Oni form.

The practical news matters more than the trailer. A public demo already existed on PS5, Xbox Series, Steam, and the Epic Games Store; Capcom has now updated it with a second quest in Oni Refuge, new systems, and a fight against the giant Daidara. At the same time the demo launched for the first time on Nintendo Switch 2 and in the Microsoft Store, so it is finally on every announced platform.

A demo save grants the Kubi Akari talisman and a Musashi stat boost in the full game — a small reward for trying it, without progress carry-over.

Metro 2039 — return to the Moscow Metro

Metro 2039 from 4A Games and Deep Silver / Plaion got a Renegade gameplay trailer at ONL and a confirmed release window: February 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The series is heading back under Moscow after the wider open locations of Metro Exodus.

The protagonist is The Stranger, a Spartan in exile pulled back into the Metro. The footage shows in-field weapon customization in the Exodus vein, a gas blowtorch, a UV lamp, heavier mutants, and paranormal traces familiar from Metro 2033 and Last Light. At the show itself the game is playable on the floor from August 27–30.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation — Weapons and the trilogy finale

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final entry in the Remake Series. Square Enix showed The Planet’s Crisis trailer: the colossal Weapons return, along with new Highwind aerial combat, underwater battles, and the summon Typhon. Release is Spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The same reel shows open traversal: parachuting from the Highwind, a grappling hook, and chocobos. The FITS system gives Cloud and Tifa new outfits with roles in the spirit of classic Final Fantasy jobs. Save data from Remake Intergrade and Rebirth unlocks the Chocobo & Moogle and Phoenix summon materia in Revelation.

Day-one takeaway

Opening Night Live 2026 stuck less because of world-premiere volume and more because of how many old industry habits are being rebuilt in modern clothes. Saber is making a road adventure, Worms is moving into a tactics roguelite, Crazy Taxi is becoming a big new online game, Ubisoft is rebuilding Heroes III, CD Projekt RED is pulling players back into The Witcher 3, 4A Games is taking the series back underground, and Square Enix is showing the Final Fantasy VII trilogy finale.

Right now you can try the updated Onimusha demo. Crazy Taxi needs a closed-test sign-up, The Witcher 3 Remastered arrives September 29, and Metro 2039, Road Kings, Worms, Crazy Taxi, Heroes III Remake, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation are 2027 waits.

The rest of the week’s schedule and stream links live on the Russian Gamescom 2026 week page, and the original show rundown is in what to expect at Gamescom 2026. Confirmed release dates for announced games are collected in the Russian release calendar.
