GTA VI news of the week #2: a big State of Play on June 2, in theaters — will GTA VI show up?
Published: May 31, 2026
We closed last week on Take-Two’s words: everything interesting about GTA VI — marketing, pre-orders and the third trailer — starts in late June. Meanwhile the big event of the next few days comes not from Rockstar but from Sony: June 2, a large State of Play. And the community is asking one question: will GTA VI turn up there?
This issue is almost entirely about Sony’s show: what’s known about it, why it is unusually big, and whether it is realistic to expect GTA VI on it.
State of Play on June 2: over 60 minutes of announcements, opening with Marvel’s Wolverine
Sony has officially confirmed a State of Play for Tuesday, June 2. The broadcast runs at 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT (21:00 UTC) — late evening in Europe, 23:00 CEST.
The show is promised long: more than 60 minutes of announcements, gameplay and premieres from studios around the world. Going by the theater screening schedule the presentation may stretch to almost 90 minutes — one of the longest State of Plays ever. Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac (out September 15, 2026) opens the whole thing. It streams on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch.
Why it matters: both the format and the runtime suggest Sony isn’t preparing a filler episode but a big summer show.
For the first time since 2018, State of Play is playing in theaters
The strangest detail in the announcement: together with the Alamo Drafthouse chain, Sony is putting State of Play on big screens for the first time in years — in several US cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Raleigh and the San Francisco Bay Area). Tickets are free, and there aren’t many of them.
The last time PlayStation went to the movies was E3 2018. Nobody does that for an ordinary stream.
Why it matters: theater screenings plus nearly 90 minutes of runtime is a claim on “something big”. That is exactly where the wave of expectations comes from — the sense that Sony is sitting on a loud surprise.
Will GTA VI be on State of Play? Short answer — don’t bet on it
With a show this big, fans went straight to GTA VI. The hype is fed by the fact that Sony has a confirmed marketing deal with Take-Two for GTA VI (promotion on PS5).
But there are details that cool the hopes down:
- GTA VI is officially not in the announced lineup.
- Zelnick himself said GTA VI marketing only ramps up toward the end of June — for a full trailer, June 2 looks early.
- A marketing deal doesn’t oblige Rockstar to hand a trailer to Sony’s venue: the studio is used to publishing its videos itself.
- There is a rumor (insider Graczdari_91) that Rockstar is preparing something separate for the show, but nothing backs it up.
Why it matters: I wouldn’t expect a full trailer 3 on June 2. The realistic ceiling is a short teaser or a mention, and even that isn’t guaranteed. If something does show up, it will more likely be a coordinated simultaneous drop on Rockstar’s own channels rather than a Sony exclusive.
GTA VI is still November 19 — the date is locked
Amid all the noise around Sony, GTA VI itself produced almost no news — which is basically good news. In its latest reporting Take-Two again confirmed the November 19, 2026 release and tied record financial forecasts to that date.
May 26 — the old release date that never happened — passed quietly, with no surprises. The target for trailer 3, pre-orders and the price is unchanged: late June (the window being named is from roughly June 21, alongside the start of the “summer” marketing).
Why it matters: no new delays, everything on track for late June. State of Play is a nice occasion, but it doesn’t decide GTA VI’s fate.
What else is expected at the show: Wolverine, God of War and more
Beyond the confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine, the rumors and insider chatter ahead of June 2 keep bringing up:
- a God of War spin-off starring Faye, Atreus’ mother;
- Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog;
- the live-service Fairgame$ from Haven Studios.
Why it matters: these are still guesses, not announcements. But a lineup of heavyweight franchises like that is exactly why there is so much noise around the show.
In short: what matters
- State of Play — June 2, 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT (late evening in Europe). Over 60 minutes, opening with Marvel’s Wolverine, streaming on YouTube and Twitch.
- Unusual scale — for the first time since 2018 the show also plays in theaters (US). Hence the “something big” expectations.
- GTA VI at the show — not officially announced; a full trailer on June 2 is unlikely. A short teaser at most, and even that is in question.
- GTA VI release date — November 19, 2026, unchanged. Trailer 3, pre-orders and price are still pointed at late June (around June 21).
- Platforms — PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PC and GTA Online are not on the table at launch.
What to watch next
The nearest checkpoint is June 2, State of Play. The realistic plan: watch the show for the PlayStation announcements and keep GTA VI as a pleasant but unlikely bonus. If Rockstar does turn up, that’s a surprise, not something to bet on.
After that the target is unchanged — late June: that is where Take-Two promises marketing, pre-orders and, logically, the third trailer.
The next issue comes right after the show: what was actually shown on June 2 (and whether there was a single word about GTA VI). The video breakdown goes up on the channel right after the article.
