Olden Era PvP combat mechanics: damage formula, initiative, morale, luck, spells

PvP in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era isn’t won by the player with more gold — it’s won by the one who knows the combat rules. Damage, initiative, morale, luck, and magic all run on specific formulas. Without them even the cleanest build folds against a competent opponent.

This guide condenses the rules into numbers and tables — no fluff, no guesses, only what the game actually ships.

Turn order and initiative

Battle is divided into rounds. Within a round, stacks act in order set by two stats:

  1. Initiative — who goes first.
  2. Speed — how many hexes the stack moves on its turn.

These are independent: high-initiative-low-speed creatures exist, and vice versa.

Tie-breakers when initiative is equal:

  • Higher Speed wins.
  • If initiative and speed tie across opposing sides, turns alternate between sides.
  • Friendly stacks with identical stats act in army-slot order (left to right in the hero screen), regardless of battlefield positioning.
  • On round 1, when everything is equal, the attacker acts first. From round 2 onward, first-action priority alternates between attacker and defender.

Wait and Skip Turn

Beyond moving and attacking, every stack has two utility actions:

  • Wait — pushes the stack’s turn to the current end of the queue. Forces a lower-initiative enemy to commit first: they either sit still or move toward you, letting you strike first.
  • Skip Turn — ends the stack’s turn immediately without movement or action. Useful for a weak stack to avoid a retaliation, or for a blocker pinning an archer in melee.

Olden Era has no separate “Defend” stance with a flat defense bonus — only Wait and Skip Turn.

Ranged shots have three restrictions:

  • Enemy adjacent — the archer is forced into melee for at most 50% of their maximum damage.
  • Distance > 3 hexes — each additional hex applies −10% damage, up to a total of −50%.
  • Through stacks or obstacles — −50% damage.

“Reach” (one-hex melee through a gap) is its own category: no counterattack provoked, but it’s not real ranged either — used by units like Necropolis’s Graverobbers.

Damage formula

The core formula applied per hit:

Damage = (Stack Size) × (Creature Damage) × (20 + ATK) / (20 + DEF)

ATK is the attacker’s Attack (including hero bonus), DEF is the defender’s Defense (including their hero’s bonus). The (20 + ATK) / (20 + DEF) modifier has no upper cap, and its lower cap is 0 — even crazy Defense doesn’t make a stack invulnerable.

Hero Attack and Defense add directly to every stack’s Attack and Defense in the army — each hero stat point is visible across the whole roster.

Bonus layers

On top of the base modifier, additional bonuses apply — and the order matters:

  • General damage (untyped) — spells like Radiant Armour or Vulnerability, abilities like Scorpion’s “Adaptation: Defense/Attack”. Penalties stack with no floor.
  • Typed damage (tied to a specific attack type) — skills like Offense and Defense, spells like Blessing, the passive “Ranged Combat Mastery” (a Battlecraft sub-skill). Bonuses sum first, then multiply; after all penalties at least 10% of damage remains.
  • Luck adds ×1.5 (Lucky hit) or ×0.5 (Unlucky hit) on top.
  • After every modifier, final damage is never less than 1.

What Offense and Defense skills actually do

  • Offense+15% / +20% / +25% damage on regular attacks (typed damage).
  • Defense−15% / −20% / −25% damage from regular attacks (typed damage).

Both are typed-damage modifiers, applied on top of the (20+ATK)/(20+DEF) base. “Expert Offense vs Expert Defense” produces a 50% typed-damage gap (+25% vs −25%, summed before multiplying).

Morale and Luck

Morale

Each point of Morale grants a 4% chance either way:

  • Positive Morale — stack acts twice in the round.
  • Negative Morale — stack skips its turn.

Sources: the Leadership skill, laws, artifacts, army composition, and map objects. Each of the 7 creature types has its own morale floor and ceiling; some (e.g. undead) are immune entirely.

Army composition is the number players forget:

Mixing factions in PvP is not viable without a strong reason: 3 factions = −1 Morale = 4% skip chance on every stack every round.

Luck

Each Luck point — 6% chance of:

  • Lucky hit: 150% of base damage.
  • Unlucky hit (negative Luck): 50% of base damage.

Sources: artifacts, laws, the Luck skill, and map objects. As with Morale, each creature type has its own cap and floor.

Spells and Knowledge

Mana: a hero starts with 10 points; each point of Knowledge adds +10 to the cap. On the global map mana auto-regenerates at 10% of maximum per day. Ending your turn in a city with a Mage Guild restores all mana the next morning.

One cast per round is the default. The Thaumaturgy skill grants an additional cast per round from a different school of magic, at increased mana cost. This is the single most important magic skill in PvP — a mage without Thaumaturgy is basically infantry.

Schools of Magic

Four primary schools plus a fifth Neutral school (global map only):

  • Daylight Magic — buffs for allies, punishes attackers.
  • Nightshade Magic — debuffs and turning enemies on each other.
  • Arcane Magic — utility, control, battlefield manipulation.
  • Primal Magic — elemental direct damage.

Schools were founded by different scholars of Jadame, and faction specialists can prevent the opponent from casting spells of their school — a unique Olden Era mechanic worth tracking on draft.

Spell Power vs Knowledge

  • Spell Power — duration of buffs/debuffs and direct-damage scaling.
  • Knowledge — mana ceiling only.

The key insight on spell mechanics:

Buffs, debuffs, and control spells have a flat effect — it scales with the spell’s level, not Spell Power. Spell Power affects duration only. A hero with 20 Spell Power casts Blessing with the same effect as a hero with 4 (just for longer). Direct damage, on the other hand, scales strongly with Spell Power — that’s the mage’s territory.

So a Might hero with Wisdom and basic buffs/debuffs barely lags a mage on those spell categories — except on direct damage. Pure caster builds live on Primal Magic.

Spell levels and Mage Guild tiers

Olden Era has two independent scales:

  • Guild tiers (1-5) — which spells are available to learn.
  • Spell levels (1-4) — how strong an individual spell is.

You raise a spell’s level via skills/sub-skills, artifacts, map objects, matching native unlocks across multiple cities, and once per spell for 25 Alchemical Dust at the Magic Observatory.

The effective cap is level 4, but extra sources still matter: when an opponent debuffs your spell level in combat, your stacked plus values absorb the hit.

Spell tiers 3-5 require either a specialized school skill (Arcane, Daylight, Nightshade, Primal) or Wisdom, which grants access across all schools without the bonuses.

Concentration and creature abilities

Active creature and hero abilities spend Focus Points, not mana. Focus accumulates as combat goes on whenever your stack:

  • attacks the enemy,
  • takes damage,
  • or triggers specific sub-skills and hero spells.

In-game tooltips don’t pin down exact thresholds (points per charge, charge cap) — in-battle each stack shows its concentration bar and ability readiness. The PvP rule: focus is a second mana bar, and high-tier abilities (vampirism, summons, area attacks) are almost always more valuable spent than saved.

What this means for PvP — practical takeaways

  1. Stat gap beats numerical advantage on small stacks. A 10 ATK vs 0 DEF gap is already ×1.5 damage. So Logistics + Offense on the main Might hero pays off harder than racing for a higher unit tier.

  2. Don’t mix factions. A third faction in your army = −1 Morale = 4% skip-turn risk on every stack. Statistically that’s a lost fight against a mono-faction.

  3. Ranged units must shoot. Pin an enemy archer in melee and they deal 50% of max with melee instead of shooting. One flying blocker (Wight for Necropolis, Locust for Hive) breaks the ranged economy.

  4. Wait flips the exchange. If your initiative is 1-2 below the enemy’s, Wait forces them to move first — and you hit the stack that walked into your range in the same round.

  5. Thaumaturgy doubles your tempo. Without Thaumaturgy a mage gets 1 cast per round; with it, 2 (the second from another school, at higher mana cost). That doubles real Spell Power output.

  6. Knowledge buys mana budget, not damage. A pure mage with +1 Knowledge gets one extra cast; with +1 Spell Power they hit harder right now. On short fights Spell Power wins.

  7. No “Defend +30%”. Old HoMM muscle memory doesn’t apply: in Olden Era pressing “Skip Turn” just ends the action. Don’t burn a turn when you could move or trigger an ability.
