Olden Era Hive PvP guide — blitzkrieg, hornets, Summon Swarm
Updated: May 25, 2026
Hive in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is the faction of the fastest creatures and the highest first-strike ceiling. Hornets fly at Speed 11, Reavers swing for 20-30 damage, and Summon Swarm gives a free second wave every battle as fire larvae.
In PvP, Hive closes games before week 3. The longer the match, the worse for you — magic factions out-curve eventually. On a blitz, nothing catches up.
Win condition: the first strike
Hive’s signature is closer placement to the opponent via Tactics and the Grandmaster spec, combined with hornet speed. One clean first turn shuts down enemy shooters and casters before they act.
Top Hive heroes in PvP
The placement grandmaster
Abigor is a Might hero with starting Tactics and a spec that gives +1 hex to placement radius on top of Tactics. Plus, units in his army get +1 initiative per 6 hero levels. At level 12 that’s +2 initiative; at level 24, +4. Hornets become first-movers by default.
The Primal Magic mage
Khariseth is a Magic hero built for a pure magic Hive: spec gives +1 to all primal spell levels and another +1 per 10 hero levels. Plus, casting primal spells doesn’t block other schools — making Thaumaturgy extra-strong. By level 10, Khariseth casts Chain Lightning at level 5 (the cap).
Hive army
Standard build — light, fast, geared for the first strike.
| Tier | Unit | Role |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | Parasite | Cheap blocker with high Defense (6). |
| T2 | Locust | Flying melee at Speed 6, lots of small stacks. |
| T3 | Hornet | Speed 11 — the game’s record. Main unit of the build. |
| T4 | Scorpion | Heavy melee, “Adaptation: Attack/Defense” ability. |
| T5 | Reaver | DPS finisher: OFF/DEF 18, damage 20-30. |
| T6 | Waurm | Speed-10 chariot. |
| T7 | Hive Queen | Late-game boss: HP 275, damage 60. |
Signature unit
Key spell
Haste — a Daylight Magic spell that the Hive blitzkrieg can’t work without.
Skill priority
For Abigor (Might):
- Summon Swarm → Expert. Free second wave every fight.
- Tactics → Expert. +1/+2/+3 placement rows plus the spec = up to 6 rows forward.
- Logistics → Expert. Adventure tempo is Hive’s main advantage.
- Offense → Expert.
- Leadership → Expert. Hornet double-turn = dead second line.
- Luck → Advanced. Strong synergy with Reavers.
- Wisdom → Basic. Access to Haste and Early Start at the cost of one slot.
For Khariseth (Magic) — swap Offense and Tactics for Thaumaturgy, Primal Magic, and Sorcery.
Law priority
| Phase | Law | Cost | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Resource Riches I (T0) | 1 | +2500 gold, +5 wood/ore. |
| Day 2-3 | Elite Parasites (T1) | 3 | +4 T1 growth, +1 HP. |
| Week 1 | Elite Locusts (T1) | 3 | +4 T2 growth, +1 Speed. |
| Week 1-2 | Elite Hornets (T1) | 3 | +2 T3 growth, +1 initiative — critical. |
| Week 2 | Tax Collectors (T1) | 2 | +250 gold per day. |
| Week 2-3 | Demonic Brood I (T1+) | — | +100% damage to larva death-blast from Summon Swarm. |

Week 1-2 opener
Hive is a first-strike faction. The goal is to land a full early army by mid-week 2 and pressure-attack.
Strengths and weaknesses
| Strength | Weakness | |
|---|---|---|
| Tempo | Fastest units in the game, +1 turn via Tactics. | Doesn’t work without the laws and Tactics. |
| First strike | Hornets + Early Start = dead shooters in one turn. | Vulnerable to Aegis and Ranged Protection passives. |
| Summon Swarm | Free second wave every fight. | Larvae die quickly without buffs. |
| Late game | Hive Queen — one of the best T7s. | At 6+ rounds you lose tempo vs Necropolis. |
